Meet the psychotherapist and author who transforms painful experiences into wisdom by exploring the conditioning behind them with the use of her experiential method. Dr Markham is a former psychotherapist and professor, who continues to inspire others through her writing, classes, and talks. She is the author of, From An African Beginning, a journey to clarity, a book about her healing journey from complex trauma to psychological and spiritual understanding.
Dr Markham spent her childhood in Africa, in Angola and Zimbabwe, witnessing the beginning of two wars for independence, and spending four years as the only white student in an all black high school during apartheid. She came to the US at seventeen to go to college at the height of the counterculture, a difficult transition. These experiences, along with her own family’s dysfunction, created a form of complex trauma. It was through both psychotherapy and spirituality that she eventually found healing. Her healing methods are not limited to trauma, but are universal to many emotional issues.
Dr Markham has a doctorate in psychology, and thirty years of experience in psychotherapy private practice. She taught psychological skills both academically, and in community centers. She received specialized training in conflict resolution, in the Enneagram personality system, in Hakomi somatic therapy, and in working with Vietnam Veterans. In her private practice she specialized in relationship and divorce issues. She is remarkably open to hearing differing points of view, and able to bring people together.
She also has thirty years experience with meditation, and exploring alternative spiritual insights such as NDEs and Christian mystics.
In her personal life, Dr Markham has been a step mother, and gone through a divorce, has experienced multicultural living, financial difficulties, and family polarization, and was a care giver to both her parents. These experiences added to her compassion for what people have to go through in life. She believes we are all here to learn from our experiences with each other, and to bring to life that compassion.
